Dale Earnhardt Jr. was in fifth place and racing with the lap leaders at NASCARs return to The Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway 400 Mile (160 laps) Race, when his engine blew with a puff of smoke indicating the end of his race on lap 136 after leading for 33 laps.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was cranking down the long Indy frontstretch when his engine came apart, better there than in the apex of one of the turns where he would been harder to avoid by the other drivers as the running of this race created a lot of crumpled fenders.
Jimmie Johnson had a second blown tire in two races and was scored in the 39th position behind Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s 34th place finish.
Martin Truex Jr., Dale Earnhardt’s Jr.’s DEI teammate finished in the 12th position, after losing his Chevy’s engine at the last NASCAR Cup Series race at Chicagoland.
Tony Stewart won this 400-miler, his second race victory in a row after a long win-less first half of the season; as the midsummer weather heated-up his Heartland homecoming Tony Stewart found the the right line in the corners.
