Solitude

“Solitude is the deepest well I have ever come across. I imagine it would be different if solitude was forced on you, but to choose it is to find a source of sustenance that never runs out.” –Robert Perkins

Looking at my life as a journey,
as a search into mystery,
I have inadvertently discovered that I can learn more about myself
in one hour of solitude
than in a week of noise.

One must, I think, tune out the world from time to time in order to discover who one is.

  1. So true, TF - rest and quiet contemplation are useful tools for self knowledge

  2. …and quiet contemplation, but I think they help us more than we know. Sure, they “use up” time, but they pay other dividends that make the rest of the day go smoother.

  3. You are so right! But we’re of the wrong generation, TF. This is land of the iPod, where solitude is a really bad place to be.

  5. I think that’s why I like to run without music and without someone with me - I like to sit and think. I don’t even have an iPod! I tried going to iTunes once to see what they have to offer and they had less than half of the music I tried to search for. I think they’re over rated.

  6. than I ever really cared to know.

Oddly enough, that barrier seems to work in both directions, for this has made me blissfully unaware of the rest of the world.
