The Trouble With RoboForm

Well, I joined communati. Hadn’t been a member for more than 9 minutes when I forgot my damn password.
No, I’m not senile, I just thought I would play around with my new RoboForm software by creating a wacky password. I managed to type it in and to confirm it but, by the time I had logged out and waited for dialup to deliver the logon page, the wacky password was a distant memory (was it 334X, 34X, 334xX, …, ?)

I learned two things and created one imponderable:

  • Mark Whitbeck knows his stuff. The password reissue feature worked beautifully. It has a one-time use password and everything. I recommend you all forget your passwords once, just to see this in action!
  • RoboForm or no RoboForm, you better type something you can remember! RoboForm only kicks in after you’ve logged out and logged back in. (It works on the first login so, technically, I could have kept dJbWkqahF6, but what’s the fun in that?)
  • Why in the world do password updates require you to confirm? If programmers would dispense with the hidden text nonsense, we could see what we typed and would only have to type it once. Presumably, we could confirm it ourselves as we wrote it down on a Post-it note and stuck it on our monitors!

Hello, world. A big shout out to Sharon Hurley Hall for inviting me here!

Note: Those pretty blue links are my affiliate ka-chings. Help a brother out.

Oh, and two sweet words for you, Mitch, my friend:

  4. I am glad SHH pointed out the way for you.

And your endorsement of Mark only enhances my growing appreciation of him!

  5. I wish I could take credit for the password feature but it is built in to the latest version of the site software. That being said, can I still keep the smile on my face along with the warm and fuzzy feeling? :)

  6. Glad to see you here. I ditched my Robo Form about 3 months ago. Now I post my passwords on the computer. Maybe I’m too old to learn a new trick, but I found that Robo form and the website didn’t agree sometimes on the password.

I like some of the changes here too.

  7. I’ve got a list of my passwords in the filebox. Not great for security, but terrific for my middle-aged mind. :O)

  8. Is it the old, metal filebox or the new-fangle plastic filebox with the hinge that won’t stay open?

I used to create such elaborate index-tab systems that I never knew where to file the 3×5 cards!

    Good luck with that. :)

  9. Aw, shucks. I coulda asked you for your license… :)
The only trouble I really have with RoboForm is that I keep forgetting to clean up the old passwords that I mass-imported from FireFox. Occasionally, there are two logins stored and I don’t pay attention to which one is selected.

  10. Hey Mark, keep smiling. In my opinion, you do get credit for implementing the feature! As the former tech support drone at WritingUp, I can tell you that botched password hand-offs was the number one issue.

Two stars for the first commenter to guess the number two issue. :)

(tip for today, increase your readership by asking provocative questions…)

  12. Wassup!!!

I agree. Just like a reunion, there is something about watching your family and friends trickle in from all over the world.

    The grill is heating up.

  13. But I don’t know the password, T.O.A. (i.e., Google was no help)

It’s great to “see” you here!

P.S. I hope the duplicate filter isn’t too harsh. I originally posted this as a new comment , rather than a reply.

  16. Hey Mitch, things are good. How are you? I’ve noticed some activity at MorphoDesigns - is your affiliate program live yet? Have you come down to earth after the graduation?

  17. I Heart Clipperz.com for a password manager (reviewed it at tedious length over at MySpace, in fact).

  18. I gotta wonder how many barbers are disappointed when they land on Clipperz.com.

Thanks for giving up the tapes :)

  19. Hi Sharon,

I’m fine as wine! The affy program is going well. My top affiliate already has five clients.

Okay, my ONLY affiliate has spoken with five prospects and we have “sorta” committments from two. A third opted for the cousin-in-law who does sites on weekends.

I am building the affiliate support system before I recruit too heavily. I have two more affiliates-in-waiting and one nice lady who just wants to send referrals my way. :)

I will be posting some thoughts on this process. Hopefully, we can get a lively conversation going.

    Cheers,

    Mitch

P.S. Post-graduation realities have set in for my son. Decision time is at hand…

  21. Send me some text and a banner when you’re ready and I will post them on my blog (banner should be narrow enough to fit in a wordpress sidebar).

  22. Glad to hear the affiliate programs up and dancing… Big turning point times for you & Sheldon, both, it seems!

  23. Thanks! Adventure, indeed. I’ll be writing more as it unfolds.

Sheldon is instrumental in the success of the launch and the continuity of the offer. He is sharing his technical prowess with Photoshop, php and MySQL. If he ever starts templating, he’ll make a mint!
